Ferniehirst, Stow

Just very belatedly – only been tracing this since the early 1980s! – spotted that the 1871 Wilton Dean census gives an even more accurate birthplace for my ggg-granny Margaret Cavers, Mrs Hall. Other records say Stow parish, either Midlothian or Selkirkshire depending on the record. This census says Fairnehirst, Midlothian, i.e. the farm Ferniehirst near Torwoodlee. That is helpful to know! There’s no surviving record of her baptism. Her parents moved around quite a lot – her dad Thomas Cavers was a shepherd. Her widowed mum Helen Scott (Mrs Cavers) ended up back at Hawick.

Margaret’s son Thomas Cavers Hall was the one who moved to farm Gattonside Mains near Melrose. Margaret’s name has passed down through multiple generations of the family, including to my Mum.

Census showing family of Hugh Hall, his wife Margaret and various children. Hugh is a Woold Machine Worker. All the family are born at Wilton, Roxburghshire except for Margaret, who is noted as born at "Fairnehirst", Midlothian.
